But in the end, the most important thing is the genius of the quotes themselves. I haven't been able to verify each and every source, although I've done the best I can to attribute these correctly. I've scoured far and wide, and what you see here represents the best quotes and one-liners about playing cards that I could find. The fact that playing cards have served as chosen symbols and metaphors to impart wisdom says something about how popular and influential playing cards have been in our culture. These 52 paste-boards have inspired witty thinkers, philosophers, and comedians alike, to come up with clever one-liners and sayings about playing cards. īut playing cards can also be a source of wisdom. You can find many versions of this great story online - read one here. " He also explains how it represents the 52 weeks of a year, four seasons, and more. When I see the Trey, it represents the three persons of the Blessed Trinity - the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. When I see the Deuce, it reminds me that the Bible is divided into two parts, the Old and the New Testaments. When I look into these cards and see an Ace, it reminds me that there is only one God. When hauled before a superior to explain why he uses the devil's picture book in church, he starts going through his entire well-worn deck, explaining as follows: “ Your Honor, to me this deck of cards is my prayer book and Bible. There's an old story - sometimes circulated by email - where a soldier explains how his playing cards help him talk to God. To some, a deck of cards can represent a prayer book and a Bible. They can even represent something much bigger than the contents of a small box. These playing cards can become your friends in a card game, your accomplices in a magic trick, and your companions in a deck collection. A deck of cards isn't just a box filled with 52 pieces of cardboard.

While hypernatremia in neonates can result from increased serum sodium levels, most commonly, it is caused by excess water loss or insufficient water intake, or a combination of both. It is important to mention that “hypernatremic dehydration” is not a diagnosis but a sign of underlying illness related to many diverse pathological and physiological processes. This will be discussed in more detail later in this review. Thus, special attention must occur when managing fluids and electrolytes in extremely preterm newborns to prevent hypernatremia. Therefore, sodium loss in preterm infants is directly related to the degree of prematurity. In contrast, preterm infants have immature kidneys with blunted end-organ responsiveness to various hormones. Īfter birth, term newborns can reabsorb the filtered sodium relatively well through their kidneys. This physiological drop must be facilitated in various disease processes, failure of which can lead to long-term morbidities. This physiological transition should still occur for newborns who initially require intravenous (IV) fluids. In the first 4–7 days after birth, term newborns typically have a decrease of up to 10% of their birth weight, while preterm neonates have a decrease of up to 15%, which is regained 10–14 days after birth. By achieving sodium hemostasis, water balance is constantly maintained between the ECF and intracellular fluid (ICF) compartments.ĭuring the transition from fetal to neonatal life, all newborns experience a one-time physiological drop in their ECF and ICF. Most of the sodium filtered from the glomeruli is reabsorbed in proximal tubules, while the remaining amount is absorbed in various locations along the nephrons via a complex interplay between intrarenal hemodynamics, the renin-angiotensin system, vasopressin, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and aldosterone. The kidneys are the principal organ that controls sodium hemostasis. Sodium is the main driving force for body water to move in and out of the cells and is monitored by multifactorial interactions between the heart, skin, kidney, and various hormones. Potential etiologies of hypernatremia in preterm and term neonates are summarized in Table Table1 1.Ī normal serum sodium level ranges between 135 mEq/L and 145 mEq/L and is the principal cation of the extracellular fluid (ECF) further subdivided into plasma and interstitial fluid. In preterm infants, the reported incidence of hypernatremia is about 40% and is usually due to insufficient fluid intake, excessive fluid loss, or excessive sodium intake. The main risk factors for hypernatremia in term newborns are related to early discharge from the hospital with ineffective lactation support or insufficient milk production leading to lactation failure. However, the reported incidence in term newborns after discharge from the hospital varies from 1% to 1.8% to as high as 5.6%. The precise incidence of hypernatremia in newborns is difficult to ascertain because of variable incidence based on geographical location, limited accessibility to hospital data, and limited post-discharge follow-up data. Mortality and morbidity are related to hypernatremia itself and inappropriate fluid management. Extracerebral complications include acute kidney injury, transaminitis, hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, metabolic acidosis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Late recognition and delayed treatment lead to severe and prolonged hypernatremia with an increased risk of mortality and central nervous system morbidities like seizures, thrombosis, intracranial hemorrhage. Hypernatremia, defined as serum sodium of more than 145 mEq/L, is a common finding in preterm neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and in term infants after discharge from the hospital. Mac users have been enjoying instant-sleep for a /very/ long time. This isn’t a valid reason to fork out for a whole new OS. You can get Google Desktop or MSN Live Desktop to do the same in XP. “Desktop search and search folders built in”īeen enjoying that feature since the release of Tiger – in 2005. Macs, plugin the mouse, use the mouse – You can even use a wireless bluetooth Mac mouse on the *firmware* bootloader – before the OS has even loaded. Accidently move it to another USB port, get the same three popup bubbles. Plug in a USB mouse, wait for three popup bubbles, then use mouse. “Up-to-date driver base and better driver handling on installation” Wow, something you’ll only do once, and for most people, never, since they’ll buy OEM. Vista has only just arrived in the 21st century with these two features, and apparently that’s a reason to switch? Macs come bundled with iPhoto, a decent photo manager. Hardware acceleration has been available since 2001. Core Image in Tiger lets the user layer multiple, real time, HD 3D filters over running video. “UI built for the era of video and digital photography” Sorry, for reminding you with the upcomming technological scandel, namely vista. But the phrase “Inbuilt undelete” must be reserved to something more powerful, lets say like Mac OSX 10.5 upcoming rollback engine by the way try “shift+Del” a file and then ask vista to retrieve it! and the interface is never confusing like MS windows media player which is hard to get to features due to Whole OS design mismatch (ie, inconsistency).īetter be called “Office files undelete” or rollback. There is nothing like iTunes its a technological marvel, they even integrated iphone with it. “Music folders come up in columns of ID3 tags, a bit like iTunes” and kept the previous in another window called “Network and sharing center” and even renamed it to “setup a connection or a network” and replaced it with new incomming connection. In “ncpa.cpl” they have removed File>new connection. Now I have to type “rundll.exe firewall.cpl,ShowControlPanel 0” with attention to the Capital S in Show and Capital C in Control and P on Panel! and on the same machine with windows server 2003 this never happen.Īlso, search for an application from the start menu and click on it to launch that application and you will be rewarded with nothin that simple, search results are not launchable.īefore I used to quickly launch firewall settings window on windows Xp, by just running “firewall.cpl” Desktop search and search folders built in”Īlright, I get desktop search to crash always at the end of the search when the search folder is a network share. (nvidia actually divides and lists limitations as nvidia caused and OS caused). Is this guy who wrote it even have a computer at home?Īll, what was written shows either he is drunk or crazy.Įven nvidia was unable to produce unbuggy drivers for that OS, and digging deep inside their driver’s manual you will see most of the limitations are caused by the vista. To learn more about current and future treatments for triple-negative breast cancer, view this Targeting Triple-Negative Breast Cancer blog post from Erica Mayer, MD, MPH, a medical oncologist with the Susan F. Clinical trials at Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center are currently underway to investigate these treatments. They are also actively studying other therapies for TNBC, including the use of PARP inhibitors, PI3 kinase inhibitors and angiogenesis inhibitors. However, researchers at Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center have discovered some molecular targets for TNBC drug therapy, including the Jak2/Stat3 pathway. This is because TNBC lacks three molecules that exist in other types of breast cancer that are the "targets" for Herceptin or tamoxifen. Eribulin, a newer form of chemotherapy, has also been used to treat TNBC.Īlthough these chemotherapy treatments are effective for TNBC, targeted treatments, such as Herceptin or tamoxifen are not. Smith Center for Women's Cancers Breast Oncology Program typically treat TNBC with chemotherapy, specifically the platinum chemotherapy drug Cisplatin, which damages cancer cells' DNA and stops them from dividing. The disease may also be associated with having an inherited mutation in the BRCA1 gene. TNBC cases are often found in younger women (under 40 years old) and in women of African American or Hispanic background. TNBC makes up approximately 10-15 percent of all breast cancers and is usually more aggressive than the other two types, estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer and HER2-positive breast cancer. Triple-negative breast cancer mainly is treated with chemotherapy. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) describes breast cancer cells that do not have estrogen, progesterone, or HER2 receptors. It does not respond to drugs that target estrogen, progesterone, or HER2 receptors. New biologic and targeted agents are increasingly emerging for the treatment of TNBC. The main treatment option remains chemotherapy, despite limited efficacy. We are committed to helping patients regain a sense of control over their lives and feel their best throughout treatment and beyond. Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) represents 15 to 20 of all breast cancers in the United States. Smith Center for Women's Cancers at Dana-Farber provides a variety of services to help patients and their families cope with the many physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges of a cancer diagnosis and its treatment. |
