I wanted to hear what people with more than a few months experience had to say about this and if I'm the only one who has had these frustrations. Is it possible to buy non-chinese RC equipment? Their big competitors seem to be everything under the Horizon Hobbies umbrella.Īfter being so frustrated with GP products I don't really want to purchase any more (to their credit they have replaced all items with pretty much no questions asked)Īre Lanier and/ or Goldberg ARFs any better?Īre there any companies out there making well designed and affordable electric ARFs that don't have all of these quality issues? or its affiliated companies, members of their immediate families and individuals living in the same households are not eligible to receive this discount. I know that the GP universe includes Futaba, Tower, GP, and appears to also include Lanier and Goldberg among others. As your skills progress, E-flite is right there with you carrying a selection of BNF (Bind-n-Fly) RC planes as well as PNP (Plug-n-Play) airplanes. I crashed that plane on the maiden (my fault) and purchased another that was even worse off. While I was waiting for GP to send replacement parts for the SSEP I purchased a Great Planes F4U-1A Corsair park flyer that I thought was of marginal quality and design and had a dead electric motor right out of the box. My Futaba 4ex radio Tx that came with the Electristar had a stick box go bad after about 40 flights. I recently purchased a Great Planes Super Sporster EP and built it only to have the ESC fail on the maiden flight. I have taught myself most basic flight conditions and aerobatics on this plane and am ready to move up. I have been flying a Hobbico Electristar trainer for well over 100 flights and it has been a great plane to learn on. IMO the best we can do is educate our fellow modeler regardless of what type of construction their airplane is.I recently got into RC electric flight after years and years of interest and experience in aviation. After a few of these adjustments the airplane would then fly in a much more acceptable manner. Not about service or reliability, but does Horizon do anything like Tower when it comes to sales. Most times the club member in question has already made the determination that the airplane is a " bad design " just to find out that with some adjustments to CG, aileron throws/differential, thrust angles etc. Tower Hobbies I have a question about Horizon Hobbies in the context of comparing them to Tower. I end up spending a great deal of time working with guys in my club on these issues. Old Tower > modern Horizon any freakin day of the week. Shoot even my LHS has trouble getting stuff from Tower (I was there and asked them about it one hour ago). I dont need the plane, I have plenty of E-flite planes, but that doesnt mean I wouldnt buy one if it were made available via HH. What I do feel is suffering due to the popularity of ARFs is the knowledge to properly set up and trim an airplane. But good god, from a hobbyists point of view, Tower was 100x the company Horizon is today. Hey, we all know that Tower Hobbies is owned by Horizon Hobby, so why the two different sale programs. In fact I think our numbers would be even lower if it were not for ARFs. I however do not think the invasion of ARFs are to blame for the decrease of popularity in our hobby. At the end of the day ARFs are just not for me unless they are of the composite variety. They flew fine but IMO they were not as durable as something I would have built myself. Although I don't much care for ARFs either I have owned a few over the years. However, at least you had two giants competing for pricing, volume discounts, and inventory levels. Back then Great Planes and Horizon Hobby made up for probably 80 of the merchandise on our shelves. I would place myself into that category as well but will also add designing to that as well. ten10thsdriver Horizon Hobby Owns Half of the Industry and it Sucks Vendor RANT WARNING I worked in a mom n pop hobby shop from 1999 to 2007. I take the phrase " entire hobby " to mean building and flying as opposed to assembling and flying.
